Self Help Groups

Fatehgarh Sahib has the unique distinction of largest number of self help groups compared to any district of Punjab. Self Help Group(SHG) approach, in the recent years has been rightly recognized as the best of socio-economic empowerment of people. The SHG movement for its forceful out reach amongst the poor, has now not only been categorised as a silent revolution in the empowerment of millions of poor but has also been recognised as an effective tool for poverty alleviation. NABARD has played a pivitol role in this movement of self help groups in District Fatehgarh Sahib. NABARD is helping these groups in their capacity building, skill up gradation, training, assistance for taking up different economic activities, credit linkage and marketing support etc.

 

 

 

 

There are five blocks in the district. CDPOs, Development officer (W.P.) and NGOs are mainly involved in the process of formation and linkage of SHGs. Mostly women are organising themselves into SHGs, which is a positive sign for the development of society. A SHG is formed with 10 to 20 persons as its members. Average loan being advanced to these groups ranges approx, between Rs. 35,000 to 40,000. Since the inception of the scheme, as many as 887 groups have been formed in the district out of which 717 SHG s have been linked. The main economic activities being adopted by the SHGs are cutting/ sewing/ Embroidery, Dairy Farming, PCOs, Agencies of / sale of Hindustan Lever under Project Shakti and other job works etc. The blockwise position of SHGs formed and linked is given below :
