Economy

The economy of the district mainly depends on agriculture, Industry and allied activities. The main source of irrigation are tubewells and canals. The main crops of the District are wheat and rice. Sirhind, Bassi Pathana, Amloh, Khamano & Mandi Gobindgarh are the main towns of the District. The Mandi Gobindgarh is also known as the ‘Steel Town of India’ having a good number of steel rolling mills. Besides, numerous industrial units are engaged in the manufacturing of sewing machine parts, centrifugal pumps, bus/truck body building and mining machinery.

The soil of the district is mera and saindy. The whether of the district in summer is hot and in winter remains cold. The rain remains satisfactory though-out the year. The winter temperature generally goes upto 3 degree Celsius and of summer 45 degree Celsius.

All the villages of the district are electrified and connected with road transport facilities of both private bus operators and Pepsu Road Transport Corporation. The District is well connected with all other main cities of the State by Road and rail. Sirhind is also a famous railway junction. The nearest airport is Chandigarh just 50 KM from the District Headquarter. The other airports are Amritsar and New Delhi.
